Pain on the outside of your foot? It could be Cuboid syndrome.
Geelong Podiatrist Jane Astbury discusses this unique condition.

What is Cuboid syndrome?
Cuboid syndrome is a common cause of pain on the outside of your foot and is often misdiagnosed. Symptoms of Cuboid syndrome arise due to a subluxation (mild dislocation) of the cuboid bone. This subluxation of the Cuboid bone in turn irritates the joint capsule, ligaments and adjacent tendons causing pain.
What causes Cuboid syndrome?
Symptoms of Cuboid syndrome can arise as a result of acute injury (commonly an ankle sprain) or slowly over time from repetitive tension/strain (running, dancing, walking etc.). During either of these instances, a subtle disruption of the calcaneal-cuboid joint can irritate the joint capsule, ligaments and adjacent tendons resulting in pain.
What are the symptoms of Cuboid syndrome?
- Pain on the outside of the foot.
- Pain that worsens with activity.
- Difficulty walking.
- Tenderness and swelling.
- Weakness in the affected foot.
How do you fix Cuboid syndrome?
- Manipulation: manipulation of the cuboid with a ‘cuboid whip’ or ‘cuboid squeeze’ is commonly used to adjust the position of the cuboid.
- Taping: The foot can be taped in a way that provides extra support and stability
- Foot orthotics can be used if the underlying biomechanics are a factor in the pain.
